Demos for non sceners

May 21, 2019

A discussion popped up on one of the demoscene related facebook groups regarding ‘what 10 demos would you show to someone who has no idea about this stuff’. Here is my pick.

#Introduction If you are reading this and you have no clue about what the demoscene is all about, check this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demoscene

I used the following guidelines when I compiled the list:

  • Show historical development
  • Show different styles
  • Regional representation
  • Main platforms (C64, Amiga, PC)

#The list Chronological order (historical timeline)

  • A c64 cracktro showing raster, scroller, multiplex, dycp and/or similar

As there is a ton of these out there, I simply didn’t pick one

Anything from here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFqBkSJOYOQ Personally I would go for Science 451 around 1:03:30 in the compilation. But that’s just nostalgic reasons.

  • Amiga
    • State of the Art / Spaceballs
    • Star Struck / TBL

I believe both of these show the pinnacle of the respective platforms. Also nice to have one from Norway and one from Sweden.

  • PC
    • Second Reality / Future Crew
    • KKowboy / Blasphemy + Purple
    • Debris / Farbrausch
    • Spin / ASD
    • Number One / Fairlight

Decent representation of regional, style and timeline. One could add a 64k (FR-08) or 4k (Elevated) but I am not sure an outsider grasps (or care) the size limitation.

  • Runner up’s
    • Nexus7 / Andromeda
    • Moral Hard Candy / Blasphemy
    • Crystal Dream 2 / Triton
    • Inside / CNCD
    • Paper / Psychic Link
    • Dope / Complex
    • Non-Stop Ibiza Experience / Orange
    • Megablast / Orange
    • Live Evil / Mandula
    • Midnight Run / ASD
    • STS-04: Instant Zen / Synesthetics
    • Gerbera / Moppi Productions
